Ships and Vessels: For windows in the hull, superstructure, and deckhouses of commercial and military vessels.
Offshore Structures: On offshore platforms and drilling rigs where windows must resist harsh weather and sea conditions.
Coastal Facilities: In buildings near the coast or on offshore structures to provide corrosion-resistant window framing.
Marine Equipment: On marine equipment that requires observation windows, such as on submersible vehicles or certain industrial applications.
Marine window frames are not standardized to a single size and can be custom-made to fit the specific requirements of a vessel or structure. Typical dimensions would consider:
Window Size: Varied depending on design requirements and the area of installation.
Frame Depth: Sufficient to accommodate the glass thickness and provide a watertight seal.
Wall Cutouts: Sized to match the window frame, with additional considerations for reinforcement and mounting.
Cutting and Shaping: Steel plates are cut to size and shaped according to the window specifications using processes like laser cutting or water jet cutting.
Forming: Steel is bent or formed into the frame shape using press brakes or roll formers.
Welding: Joints in the frame are welded together to ensure watertightness. For marine applications, welding quality is crucial and is often inspected using non-destructive testing methods.
Machining: After welding, the frame is machined to ensure smooth surfaces for the mounting of glass and hardware.
Surface Treatment: To prevent corrosion, the frame is typically blast cleaned and coated with marine-grade paint systems. Stainless steel frames may be passivated to enhance their corrosion resistance.
Assembly: Rubber seals, glazing, and other hardware are fitted to the frame.
Testing: Frames may be tested for strength and watertightness, sometimes in simulated weather conditions.
Inspection and Quality Control: Regular inspections occur throughout the manufacturing process to ensure that the frames meet the required standards and specifications.
The values above for tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation are minimum or typical values, and actual values can vary between producers and specific conditions of processing and heat treatment. The 316L grade has a lower carbon content than 316, which provides additional corrosion resistance and ease of welding.
